Chapter Twelve

Charlotte

For the first time since arriving at Talbot Hall, there was someone else in the kitchen when she entered it.

Jane, a member of the staff for as long as Charlotte could remember, was in the process of wiping down a countertop.

At being interrupted, the older woman glanced up and forced a small smile. “Can I help you with something?” she asked, draping the cloth over her shoulder.

“Uh, I was just going to make myself a sandwich.”

“I can get that for you,” she said, already in the process of retrieving a loaf of bread from the breadbox.

“Are you sure?”

“It’s my job.”

“Uh, then yeah, thank you.”

“What kind?” She set the bread down, meeting Charlotte’s gaze. She was very much the no nonsense type.

“Turkey,” Charlotte replied. “Some mustard, lettuce, and tomato, please?”

“Sure thing.”

And almost before she could blink, Jane was already gliding through the kitchen, snatching things that would’ve been needed.

Charlotte backed out of the room, somehow feeling like she was intruding on her own lunch. “I’ll, um, I’ll be back in a minute.”

If Jane heard, she didn’t bother acknowledging the fact.

Charlotte had never been comfortable asking the staff for anything. She’d ride the coattails of the family, sure, but preferred to get whatever she needed for herself rather than “ordering” someone else to do it.

There was nothing for her to do for the few minutes it would take for the sandwich to be made, so Charlotte found herself wandering a little. She’d intended to make a wide circle through the main floor and return to the kitchen, but her journey was interrupted before she had the chance.

Aiden emerged from around a corner, his gaze set to hers. Unlike before, she could see his eyes. His sunglasses hung from the pocket of his still-unbuttoned shirt.

Her insides trembled at the closeness of him, memories less than an hour old flashing in her mind and the minutes-old interaction with Gisele still freshly affecting her. She wouldn’t admit it out loud, but watching him get off spying on her and another man had been without description.

Silence stretched between them, lasting long enough that she couldn’t help breaking it.

“What’re you doing here?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

She narrowed her eyes. There was very little he did that wasn’t planned in one way or another.

“Why did we break up?” he asked.

The question surprised her, forcing her brain to reboot just to answer it.

“You gave me an ultimatum. I don’t respond well to those.”

He began a slow approach. “Doesn’t sound like me.”

The shock faded immediately. Charlotte cocked a brow. “It sounds exactly like you.”

He shrugged again.

A strange sensation tickled at the back of her neck. She didn’t like the situation she found herself in and wasn’t certain how to proceed with it. “Seriously, what are you doing here?” she asked.

“I seriously don’t know.”

She was unnerved by the fact that he wasn’t giving her anything to go off of. There was no direction to take the conversation, no hint as to what he wanted. “Do you just plan to stalk
